HOUGHTON REVISITED HOUGHTON HALL, NORFOLK

Masterpieces from the Hermitage

This extraordinary exhibition brought together masterpieces from the magnificent collection of Britain’s first Prime Minister - Sir Robert Walpole. Sold in the 18th century to Catherine the Great to adorn the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the works, including Rembrandt, Veronese, Rubens, Van Dyck, Marrata, Giordano and Poussin, were assembled in their spectacular original setting of Houghton Hall for the first time in over 200 years.

Momart advised the exhibition registrar and curator on the planning and execution of the project, including shipping of the collection from private collectors and museums in Russia, the US and the UK, navigating Russian export customs and transporting loaned works directly from the airport to Houghton Hall in our specialist fine art, temperature controlled trucks.

The project and installation were technically and logistically complex, with a very tight schedule, in a listed building that is still a family home. We were challenged with hanging the large, heavy paintings in their ornate frames as close as possible to their original positions in the state rooms, requiring custom-built lifting equipment. After a smooth installation and a successful exhibition, we returned all the pieces to the lenders around the world.
