The cultural phenomenon of the year

The beautiful and thought-provoking exhibition of China’s most influential artist Ai Weiwei has been one of the most successful shows at the Royal Academy of Arts in London last year. Curated in collaboration with the artist from his studio in Beijing, the exhibition presented some of his most important works from the time he returned to China from the US in 1993 right up to present day.

Alongside new works created specifically for the RA galleries and courtyard, the show featured a number of large-scale installations, works showcasing everything from marble and wood to tea and glass, as well as the heaviest sculpture to ever be housed in Burlington House – ‘STRAIGHT’, an installation consisting of 90 tonnes of steel reinforcing rods straightened by hand after being mangled in 2008 quake. 

Momart provided full logistics coordination and art handling services for the packing, transport and installation of this unique project. From early stages we were involved in liaising with stakeholders including the artist, his gallery, lenders and the RA to precisely plan all transport processes and arrange required export permits.

We worked towards a very tight delivery schedule for the sea freight shipments of many heavy and oversized objects, and needed additional time for the complex installation of the artworks at the RA galleries.

All installation works were completed on time for the exhibition opening, with both the artist and the client very satisfied with the outcome.
